What Is Internal & Family Medicine (Primary Care)?
Internal Medicine and Family Medicine are medical specialties that provide comprehensive primary care, with a focus on disease prevention, wellness, and the diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. Internal Medicine physicians specialize in the care of adults, while Family Medicine physicians are trained to care for patients of all ages.
At Bergen Medical Associates, our primary care providers work together to deliver personalized, coordinated care that helps patients achieve and maintain their best health. They care for patients when they are healthy and when they are sick, providing preventive services such as annual physicals, wellness visits, recommended health screenings, and immunizations. They also diagnose and manage a wide range of illnesses and chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma, respiratory infections, arthritis, and many other common medical concerns.
When specialized care is needed, your provider can coordinate diagnostic testing, referrals, and treatment plans with our multidisciplinary team of specialists, helping to ensure seamless, comprehensive care.
The primary care providers at Bergen Medical Associates care for patients both when they are healthy and sick. Preventative medicine services include complete physical examinations and appropriate health care screenings. For acute issues and chronic conditions, an internist can coordinate diagnostic services and treatment plans, working directly with specialists to ensure a patient’s needs are met.
Diagnosis and Treatment
As a Patient-Centered Medical Home, Bergen Medical Associates takes a comprehensive approach to care. Instead of referring patients out for testing, many routine diagnostic tests can be completed onsite. For patient convenience, most routine and diagnostic tests can be performed at the offices by internists and other specialists, including:
24-Hour Heart Monitoring
Patients can receive round-the-clock blood pressure and heart rhythm monitoring. A temporary monitor will record the heart’s electrical activity for a 24- to 72-hour period. This information can help diagnose conditions such as arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, or other heart episodes.
Blood Draw
Bergen Medical Associates’ onsite services include convenient phlebotomy testing for routine lab work, disease-specific screenings, and genetic testing. Blood testing can aid in the diagnosis of different medical issues and help doctors determine how well a treatment plan is working to reduce symptoms of a condition.
Electrocardiogram (EKG)
This test uses electrodes to monitor heart rhythm and related activity and takes just a few minutes to complete. The diagnostic procedure involves placing electrodes on areas of the body connected to the heart to observe electrical signals. Bergen Medical Associates performs EKGs onsite to check for signs of heart disease or underlying issues. Patients can access EKG services at all offices.
Ultrasound
Unlike X-rays, ultrasounds do not use any radiation to generate images. Instead, they utilize sound waves to create images of different body structures. Patients can schedule onsite ultrasound appointments for routine imaging tests. Ultrasounds are used to monitor pregnancy but can also serve as diagnostic tests for checking the heart, gallbladder, kidneys, and thyroid. Ultrasound is only available at the Emerson, Montvale, and Paramus locations.
